The Philadelphia Flyers made the decision to fire head coach John Tortorella in March of 2025 but now, almost exactly one year later, Tortorella is back behind a National Hockey League bench once again.

On Sunday, the Vegas Golden Knights made a stunning announcement when they fired longtime head coach Bruce Cassidy. While it was clear that the Golden Knights were having significant struggles this season, it still comes as a surprise to see Cassidy fired after winning a Stanley Cup with Vegas just 3 seasons ago.

The Golden Knights however have a plan in place and they have already made the move to hire the controversial Tortorella, announcing the hiring alongside the announcement of Cassidy's termination on Sunday.

Totorella's most recent coaching tenure ended in considerable controversy. Not only did Tortorella's Flyers experience a late season collapse, but Tortorella was heavily criticized for comments he made while on his way out.

"This falls on me. I’m not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we’re at right now," said Tortorella during comments to the media. "But I have to do a better job. So this falls on me, getting the team prepared to play the proper way until we get to the end."

Tortorella has always been a coach with a limited shelf life before he begins to wear on his own players, and now only time will tell how long that takes to happen in Las Vegas.
