Questions continue to swirl around a key absence ahead of Game 1 against Colorado.
The Vegas Golden Knights face a major problem heading into the Western Conference Final.
Captain Mark Stone remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury, and head coach John Tortorella is offering absolutely no clarity on the situation ahead of tonight’s Game 1 against the Colorado Avalanche.
Stone has already missed the final three games of Vegas’ second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks and was absent again from full practice preparations leading into the conference final.
However, there was one intriguing development at Ball Arena. Stone skated with the scratches, marking the first time he has been back on the ice with the team since suffering the injury.
That immediately sparked speculation that the veteran forward could be nearing a return. But when reporters attempted to get an update after practice, Tortorella quickly shut the conversation down.
“There’s no update on injuries right now,” the Vegas coach said bluntly.
The vague response only intensified concern surrounding one of the most important players in the organization.
Stone is widely regarded as one of the NHL’s elite two-way forwards and likely would have played a massive role in attempting to slow down Nathan MacKinnon and Colorado’s explosive attack during this series. Without him, Vegas suddenly looks far more vulnerable defensively against an Avalanche team that has dominated nearly everyone in its path this postseason.
At this point, it remains unclear whether Stone is close to returning or simply testing the injury before making a decision.
Either way, Tortorella’s refusal to provide details is only adding more mystery to a situation that could dramatically impact the outcome of the Western Conference Final.
