Jonathan Bernier pulled from the game under mysterious circumstances.

This one seems a little bizarre but it may be bad news for the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings are facing the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night and for Detroit Red Wings' goaltender Jonathan Bernier it was a chance to showcase his skills against his former team. I can't speak for Jonathan Bernier of course but I personally would relish any chance I could get to show up a team I once played for, especially as a goaltender that can singlehandedly alter the outcome of a game with a strong performance, which is why his sudden disappearance this evening seems so strange.

Bernier played roughly the first 6 minutes of the game against the Maple Leafs and made a couple of saves in the process, but after a penalty call went against his Red Wings he just up and left the game during a commercial break. When we got back from commercial cameras showed us a replay of Bernier skating to the Red Wings bench and leaving down the tunnel, however it remains entirely unclear what happened to the veteran netminder. Usually when a player is pulled in this fashion your first thought goes to a trade, but there has been little or no mention of Bernier in trade rumors as of late and it would seem an odd time to trade your starting goaltender if you're the Red Wings. Alternatively Bernier could be injured here but he did not seem to suffer any type of injury while he was out on the ice so that also seems like a fairly unlikely scenario.

We will likely have to wait some time for an answer on what happened to Bernier, however stay tuned as we will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Update: According to a report from Detroit Red Wings insider Helene St. James of the Detroit Red Wings Bernier has in fact been injured. St. James reports that the Red Wings have informed her that Bernier is questionable to return to tonight's game as the result of what they are calling a "lower body injury." It is unclear how Bernier got hurt in this game but presumably it was during one of the saves he made this evening.
