Woll to get his second NHL game.

As a result of some unfortunate early season luck for the Toronto Maple Leafs, it appears as though goaltender Joseph Woll will get just the second start of his young career in the National Hockey League.

On Saturday, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe announced that Woll would get another start but it won't come tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Instead Keefe will go with Leafs starting goaltender Jack Campbell this evening, and Woll will get the start against the New York Islanders on Sunday in their 2nd game of a back to back.

Presumably the decision was made by Keefe in the hopes of giving Campbell a few days of rest following tonight's game, understandable when you consider he has been between the pipes for the Leafs in 15 of their 18 games this season.

For 23 year old Joseph Woll this will be a chance to improve on what was an underwhelming performance in his NHL debut. Woll and the Leafs faced off against the Buffalo Sabres in that one and, although the Leafs would emerge victorious, Woll had a lackluster game and recorded a 4.00 goals against average and a .852 save percentage.

Realistically Woll is being used due almost exclusively to the fact that veteran netminder Petr Mrazek has been out of action due to a nagging injury. Mrazek was expected to help ease some of the burden off of Campbell this season, or possibly even take over in the event that Campbell faltered as a full time starter, but has been limited to just 2 appearances this season due to injury and only 5 periods of play in total.

There is some good news on this front for the Maple Leafs however, and that comes in the form of progress for Mrazek. The veteran netminder continues to work his way back from the injury and was on the ice for the Maple Leafs on Saturday. Mrazek seemed to be fairly spry and was even facing a couple of shots in net, an indication that he likely isn't all that far away from his inevitable return.
