Whoa! Not sure I saw this coming!
According to multiple online accounts, the New York Rangers have named JT Miller as their new captain. Miller, who was acquired by the team from the Vancouver Canucks last season, takes over the role from Jacob Trouba who has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks.
Not that Miller is not worthy of wearing the "C", I just think that this is an interesting decision. After all, Miller hasn't been on or around the team for that long, but has clearly established himself in the team's culture. If nothing else it says something about longer tenured Rangers like Adam Fox, Mika Zibenajad and Artemi Panarin.
UPDATE: The team has now confirmed the reports.
“We’re pleased to announce J.T. Miller as the new captain of the New York Rangers,” said Rangers president Chris Drury in a prepared statement. "Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice. Congratulations to J.T. and his entire family on an incredibly meaningful achievement and we’re confident he will continue to represent our organization with class, commitment, and integrity.”
The 31 year old Miller has never captained a team in his NHL career, but worse an "A" with Vancouver as an alternate captain for years.
