Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon doesn't hold back when addressing fans in Toronto.
Mitch Marner is officially headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in his National Hockey League career, but while Marner's success has been great for fans of the Vegas Golden Knights, it has left some of his former fans feeling bitter.
Recently Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon was interviewed in Toronto and it was during that appearance that McCrimmon delivered a harsh dose of reality to the fans who have been rooting against his player all season long.
McCrimmon began by dismissing the notion that Marner was somehow suddenly playing well in the playoffs, suggesting instead that Marner has been great for the Golden Knights all season long.
"He's been really good all year," said McCrimmon on TSN's Overdrive.
While McCrimmon acknowledged that Marner's point production had dipped in the regular season, he pointed to important factors like Marner being moved to center while William Karlsson was injured as big contributions on Marner's part this season.
"When you compare what he had in Toronto, 102 points last year, he didn't have 102 points with us.... there's more things that go into winning that just the goals and the assists," said McCrimmon.
When it came down to why Marner was shining in Vegas, even during the big moments in which he often faltered during his tenure in Toronto, McCrimmon suggested that fans in Toronto had blamed the wrong man all along.
"My own opinion is we have a deeper team," said McCrimmon. "When you get to the playoffs everybody has to take a turn."
McCrimmon believes that you simply cannot win, at least not very easily, with the way the Maple Leafs had constructed their roster.
"When it comes down to 2 or 3 or 4 players being responsible for your team to advance to the next round, that's a stiff challenge," said McCrimmon. "That's a tough way to win."
As for the fans bitter about Marner's sudden success outside of Toronto, McCrimmon had a message for them as well.
"I know it's Toronto, I know it's Mitch MArner, I know it's polarizing, but for me it's a little bit about the guy's ex girlfriend moving away and doing well," said McCrimmon. "At some point you gotta get over it."
