The Jesse Puljuarvi era is officially over in Edmonton, as the Oilers shipped him to the Carolina Hurricanes earlier today in exchange for prospect forward Patrik Puistola. He ends his time in an Oilers uniform having appeared in 351 career games, scoring 51 goals with 61 assists.

And according to Oilers general manager Ken Holland, it was simply time for the two sides to part ways with one another.

“Trying to move $3 million for a guy who has five goals and played six minutes last game is tough,” said Holland. “They weren’t opposed to the money but thought it was best to get a fresh start. From that point in time I knew his days would be numbered here in Edmonton."

“It’s a disappointing day on one hand because he’s a fourth overall pick and you’re hoping that pick is going to have some significant impact on your team.”

Unfortunately, things never really came together for the Finnish forward with the Oilers, and they decided to move on.

“I like to think that Jesse has done everything he can do to be the best player he can be,” said Holland. “He went back to Finland. He’s worked hard on his English. He’s gotten more physical and the coaching staff has tried to be as patient and give him as much opportunity as possible. But, unfortunately, we’re at this day today and we have to move forward.”

And for fans wondering if there are additional moves up the sleeve of Holland, he announced that he'd be willing to part ways with a major asset in order for a pure rental.

The NHL Trade Deadline is quickly approaching, falling this Friday afternoon.
