Unique insight from the former NHL player.
The decision from Tampa Bay Lightning star forward Nikita Kucherov to demand a trade from the only National Hockey League team he has ever played for has shocked fans around the league and left everyone speculating about what could be motivating Kucherov's desire for a change.
On Saturday night, former NHL defenseman Kevin Bieksa shared his insight into what he thought was going on, pointing to the fact that he believes Kucherov may have felt insulted by his recent contract negotiations with the Lightning.
"This is a different one for me though," said Bieksa. "This is something where he's been offended at some point in the negotiation."
Bieksa pointed to the recent skyrocketing contracts around the league as a significant factor in why Kucherov may feel slighted by the Lightning's negotiating position.
"Some of these other guys like Carlsson and Gauthier are getting paid on potential and if you're Kucherov you're sitting there saying 'Screw the potential, I'm the man. I've won the Hart Trophy, I've won Stanley Cups, pay me for me,'" saids Bieksa.
Making matters even worse for the Lightning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman made it sound like Kucherov isn't likely to change his mind about this trade demand.
"I had a lot of people say 'Once that guy makes a decision or comes to a decision it is extremely difficult if [not] impossible to get him to change his mind,'" said Friedman of Kucherov's trade request.
