Kevin Bieksa tears into Thomas Chabot after an ugly 1st period.
Bieksa pulling no punches.
Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot is not having a particularly good night and as if that wasn't bad enough he is now also getting an earful from a well respected former National Hockey League player.
During the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, former NHL defenseman Kevin Bieksa singled out Chabot as a big problem for the Senators this evening, highlighting a number of mistakes committed by the young defenseman during the period. Bieksa took note of 6 different mistakes during the game's opening period, all of which he attributed to poor play from Chabot.
"Well yeah, I'm a positive guy, we all know that, but wow was that a bad period," said a very serious Bieksa. "I only wrote down the first 6 bad things that I saw Chabot do. I understand, I'm not the biggest Ottawa Senators guy, I don't watch all their games, but this is the first shift of the game.... this is a 2 on 1 the other way that's one mistake it happens, but he follows it up with falling for no reason, a lazy box out that's almost tipped in, icing the puck, tips the puck in his own net, dangled by Giroux. I mean this is your guy who is your star player and he's making six mistakes that I recorded, that I documented, in one period."
Not only was Bieksa critical of the play from Chabot on it's own merits, but he also highlighted why it could be an even bigger problem for the Senators on a night like this. Bieksa pointed to the fact that Senators first round pick Jacob Bernard-Docker, who is still a rookie, was also in the game this evening and could potentially be picking up bad habits from what is meant to be the Senators star defenseman,
"You have Bernard-Docker who is playing his 8th NHL game who's watching this guy, and I just can't understand how you can either be the best player on the ice or the worst player on the ice every game, and if I'm a coach I don't sleep very good at night."
As a former NHL defenseman in his own right Bieksa speaks from a position of authority on the topic, and I wouldn't be surprised if word of this reached Chabot's ears.
