Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff held media availability Tuesday in the wake of the Chicago Blackhawks scandal. This was prompted as the GM, who served an assistant GM in Chicago back in 2010, was not disciplined for his role in the mishandling of Kyle Beach’s sexual assault allegations.
During the press conference, Cheveldayoff explained why the investigation cleared him. The GM explained that it was not until this year that he became aware that Kyle Beach was sexually assaulted. He said that he left the May 23, 2010 meeting thinking it would be addressed by those above him and figured it was when Brad Aldrich left the club three weeks later.
General manager Stan Bowman and head coach Joel Quenneville, both with the ‘Hawks in 2010, have already resigned from their current positions in the NHL.
“I want to begin by stating how sorry I am that this happened to Kyle and that he suffered as horribly as he did.” Said, based on his involvement, “It was not clear to me what had fully transpired,” did not know extent of the allegations until this year.
Owner Mark Chipman kicked off the press conference with a strong statement, and both men apologized to Kyle Beach and hope they can get informed and better to help others and learned from survivors.
Cheveldayoff has revealed that he has spoken with Sheldon Kennedy and will follow his online course on dealing with sexual assaults and sexual abuse without organizations to be a better leader, to know more, get educated and therefore be able to help if another situation arises in his life.
The press conference lasted over an hour. Murat Ates did an amazing breakdown and follow-up on all quotes and questions in this presser. Check it out here: https://twitter.com/WPGMurat/s...
