The Winnipeg Jets general manager doesn't even try to hide his feelings.
On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets finally put an end to the drama surrounding now former Winnipeg Jets star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck when they traded the veteran goaltender to the New Jersey Devils for a package of players and draft picks.
Although the trade puts an end to this chapter of the story I suspect it won't be long before the next chapter of this saga begins, and not only because the Jets and Devils will face each other in just a few short weeks on November 10th. On Friday, following the trade, Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made it clear that he would have liked to have moved on from Hellebuyck much sooner had it been possible.
"I certainly wish I could have done it 5 or 4 months ago when the opportunity first started, when we were looking," said Cheveldayoff on Friday.
There have been multiple reports that have indicated that the Winnipeg Jets front office and locker room had no interest in allowing Hellebuyck to return to the team and some of the public comments by the players in that locker room have only reinforced those rumors. It sure seems that Cheveldayoff's desire to be rid of his once prized goaltender may be just the latest example of a team that was more than ready to move on from a player that they clearly no longer considered one of their own.
