Horror collision with Tom Wilson… hopefully it looked worse than it was
A terrifying moment unfolded late in Friday’s Canada-Switzerland matchup when Swiss forward Kevin Fiala was stretchered off the ice.
With less than three minutes remaining in the third period, Fiala tangled awkwardly with Tom Wilson near the boards, his left leg caught in the collision.
He stayed down for long, in obvious pain, with teammates and trainers gathering around him.
Struggling to get onto his back, he had to be taken off on his stomach while teammates surrounded him in support.
That really really sucks for Fiala. A complete accident… It's amazing how quiet a packed arena can get.
The Canadian bench remained silent, visibly concerned, as the game was briefly delayed. Players tapped their sticks in solidarity while medical staff worked to get Fiala safely to the dressing room.
It appears the knee took the brunt of the impact, and unfortunately, it’s expected that Fiala’s Olympic tournament is over.
Fiala was taken to the hospital after his injury.

What had been a competitive matchup ended on a somber note, leaving fans and players alike shaken by the serious injury.
After the game, Wilson had this to say about the collision, feeling especially terrible about the outcome: "It’s the Olympic Games and I feel terrible that he may not be able to keep playing. Just sending his family and him my best. You never want to see a guy go down, in a tournament like this, especially."
Canada went on to win 5-1 over Switzerland, who lost a lot more than the game…
