Kevin Hayes publicly disagrees with the Flyers decision to sit Yandle.
The Flyers forward does not agree.
The Philadelphia Flyers ruffled a few feathers over the weekend when they put an end to veteran defenseman Keith Yandle's record setting Ironman streak in the National Hockey League, and it seems more and more people are coming out of the woodwork to express their disagreement with that decision.
The latest comes to us courtesy of Philadelphia Flyers insider Sam Carchidi, and this time around it is an active member of the Flyers roster that is expressing his disagreement with the decision. Fans who know the Flyers well won't be surprised to learn that Kevin Hayes is that player, Hayes and Yandle have a close friendship and as a result it may color Kayes' perspective on the matter. That was something that Hayes himself acknowledged over the weekend when he expressed that he did not agree with the decision made by his team.
"Decisions need to be made every day, us player don't make those decisions." began Hayes. "It's truly on us the reason why he probably had to sit out a game... I can't say I agree with it."
Hayes appeared to be at a loss for words at moments during his comments, but in spite of that he had a lot to say on the topic. This was perhaps an indication that Hayes felt the need to vent his poorly concealed frustration at the decision from the team. He went on to express that he feels what Yandle brings to the team and to the Flyers locker room cannot be measured on a simple stat sheet.
"The impact that Keith has on myself and the guys in that locker room is something that can't be measured," added Hayes. "I know sometimes the media is all over him but what he provides to some of these young guys on this team is something no one else can do."
Hayes acknowledge his potential conflict of interest here by admitting that he and Keith are close, although I got the feeling he believes he would feel the same even if that were not the case.
"I know he's one of my best friends but the way he goes about his everyday life is truly professional," said Hayes. "I know he's a role model for a lot of people."
Unfortunately for Hayes and for Yandle those intangibles failed to materialize into wins on the ice, and Yandle has as a result paid the price.
