Kevin Labanc joins a new team on a professional tryout offer.
Veteran National Hockey League forward Kevin Labanc is hoping for a chance at one more season in the NHL, and by the sounds like he will be getting that opportunity.
On Sunday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Labanc and the Carolina Hurricanes had agreed to a professional tryout offer (PTO), one that will give Labanc a shot at earning himself a new NHL contract this season.
A PTO is not an NHL contract but it does allow a player to join a team for training camp as well as preseason games, with the idea being that the player can showcase he is still a valuable asset and earn an NHL deal in the process. That deal can be with the team that signed him to the PTO, but it can also come from elsewhere with the player still technically an unrestricted free agent.
Labanc struggled since exploding onto the scene with a 56 point season during the 2018-19 regular season as a member of the San Jose Sharks, and his most recent season with the Columbus Blue Jackets was sadly no exception. Labanc appeared in just 34 games last season and recorded 2 goals and 10 assists for a total of 12 points, finishing the season with 12 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of +1.
The Hurricanes are obviously hoping that they can once again bring out the best from Labanc, but it will remain up to the 29 year old forward to showcase that he still has some gas left in the tank.
Do you expect that Labanc will earn another deal before the season gets underway? Let me know your predictions in the comments.
