Kiefer Sherwood has finally been traded.
The Vancouver Canucks have finally pulled the trigger.
On Monday, the Canucks officially announced that they had traded veteran forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks, with the move coming after weeks and months of speculation regarding Sherwood's future.
According to the official announcement, the Canucks are sending Sherwood to the Sharks in exchange for 25 year old undrafted defenseman Cole Clayton as well as a pair of second round picks. One of the second round picks will be at this year's NHL Entry Draft and the other will be at the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.
The Canucks were reportedly holding out for a first round pick according to rumors, which would suggest that they were unable to find a suitor willing to pay that price.
Clayton is an undrafted defenseman that has never played at the NHL level and his inclusion in this deal seems more likely to be designed to equalize the number of contracts moving in this deal than due to any genuine desire from the Canucks to acquire him.
Sherwood is of course the centerpiece of this deal and has been in high demand around the NHL due to his physical style of play. He has 17 goals and 6 assists for 23 points in 44 games this season, pretty respectable numbers given how much the Canucks have struggled this season.
