The Los Angeles Kings are reportedly exploring options to replace Kevin Fiala after the star forward suffered a season-ending injury during the Olympics. Fiala was stretchered off the ice during Switzerland’s loss to Canada last week in Italy after an awkward collision with Tom Wilson left him with fractures in his left lower leg. He has since undergone surgery and is beginning his recovery and rehab.

While the Olympic pause includes a roster freeze, it hasn’t stopped the Kings from evaluating potential trades. General manager Ken Holland is expected to consider options ahead of the March 6 trade deadline, and speculation is already swirling around Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson, who, well, would you look at that, is being showcased at the Olympics.

Pettersson carries a full no-movement clause, but insiders suggest the Kings’ interest has grown following his strong showing at the Olympics, including a two-goal performance for Sweden in the tournament. With $15 million in cap space and the chance to reunite Pettersson with former linemate Andrei Kuzmenko, a move could be enticing. His wife’s history living in Los Angeles for 13 years might also make the city an appealing destination.

The Kings have time to monitor Pettersson as he leads Sweden into the quarterfinal against Team USA later today, giving management a closer look before making a move.

Fiala’s absence leaves a significant gap in the Kings’ lineup, and with the trade deadline looming, fans should expect a flurry of rumors, and possibly big moves, as Los Angeles seeks to keep its postseason hopes alive.
