UPDATE 2: Kirill Kaprizov finally met with the media today as the Minnesota Wild opened camp today and was asked point-blank for his long-term plans. He made it clear that his focus is simply on playing hockey and that there's plenty of time for negotiations to take place. He also reiterated that he loves living and playing in Minnesota.

These comments come just hours after Wild GM Bill Guerin made similar comments. Read below for our earlier report, published this morning.

UPDATE: Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin met with the media today as his team opens training camp and, of course, was asked about ongoing contract negotiations with superstar forward Kirill Kaprizov. Guerin provided fans with little hope with his cryptic statement on the matter.

Check it out, courtesy of Wild insider Michael Russo:

"These negotiations are private. I can't really get into it. Things are fine. The most important thing is that we want to sign Kirill. He's our franchise player. We want to keep him here. He's a big part of our team. We're working towards that. We're doing the best we can."

That.... that doesn't sound like the words of a confident man. How we feelin', Minny fans?

It was reported earlier by TSN insider Pierre LeBrun that contract negotiations between Kirill Kaprizov and the Minnesota Wild are becoming increasingly tense. Of course, the report has been intensified by pressing trade rumours, and now Michael Russo reports that the Carolina Hurricanes are emerging as the team most motivated to land the star forward, even if it means breaking the bank. As the Wild continue tense contract negotiations with their franchise player, Carolina could be the team willing to take bold action.

According to Russo, the Hurricanes are prepared to pay top dollar to acquire Kaprizov if the Wild decide to entertain trade discussions.

“The Hurricanes are the one team that I think is extremely motivated to try to get Kirill Kaprizov… and would be willing to pay him; they’re a team the Wild might talk trade with,” Russo explained on DFO Rundown.

This sets Carolina apart from other NHL teams, signaling that they could be a serious player if Minnesota’s talks with Kaprizov break down.

Kaprizov’s future in Minnesota remains uncertain, especially after it was reported that last week that the Russian star allegedly turned down an eight-year deal worth $16 million per season. With tensions mounting in contract talks, the Hurricanes’ willingness to go all-in adds a new layer of intrigue.

If the Wild cannot reach an agreement, Russo’s reporting suggests Carolina is ready to act aggressively, offering both a clear path to playing in a contender and a salary package that could challenge Minnesota’s current offer.

The NHL will be watching closely as training camps begin and negotiations continue. Kaprizov’s next move could shift the balance of power for the Wild, the Hurricanes, or another team ready to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
