Kirill Marchenko skips media as new trade front-runner emerges

The offseason rumour cycle around Kirill Marchenko has been simmering for months now. But in the span of just a few days, the temperature has jumped significantly, and the Columbus Blue Jackets forward finds himself at the center of one of the NHL's most closely watched trade storylines heading into the new season.

Columbus general manager Don Waddell was reportedly spotted in Montreal on Tuesday, according to Maxime Truman. No official reason was given for the visit.

The timing is hard to ignore. Marchenko has been heavily linked to the Canadiens for months, with Montreal GM Kent Hughes reportedly showing sustained interest in the talented winger. A deal can obviously be struck over the phone, but the in-person appearance adds another layer of intrigue.

Meanwhile, the situation in Columbus appears to be growing more uncomfortable by the day.

Marchenko's agent made it public earlier this summer that his client does not intend to re-sign with the Blue Jackets. That declaration set the stage for everything that has followed.

According to Aaron Portzline on training camp opening day, Waddell said he had a lengthy conversation with Marchenko. The GM relayed that Marchenko told him, "I'm going to play my butt off here." Notably absent from that statement was any indication of a willingness to sign an extension.

Head coach Rick Bowness added fuel to the fire in an interview with Portzline, offering what many interpreted as a pointed message. Bowness reportedly said he only wants players in his locker room who genuinely want to be part of the organization. The implication was not lost on observers.

Waddell has publicly stated he is open to listening to offers for any player on his roster, Marchenko included. The 25-year-old posted 67 points last season, including 27 goals, while carrying a cap hit of just $3.85 million. That kind of production at that price makes him an extremely attractive trade target.

Columbus is believed to be seeking players who can contribute to its lineup immediately, which could shape the return in any potential deal.

Marchenko's unwillingness to commit beyond his current contract, combined with the growing tension around the organization and Waddell's curious trip to Montreal, suggests this situation is heading toward a resolution sooner rather than later.
