Kraken sign former Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny.
Kraken add some depth to their blue line.
The Seattle Kraken have added some veteran depth to their blue line and have somewhat surprisingly done so while managing to remain under the National Hockey League's salary cap in spite of their limited cap space.
According to a report from Cap Friendly, the Kraken have signed former Washington Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny to a new one year contract that will carry an average annual value and cap hit of $750,00. This will be a one way deal, which is no doubt important for Kempny who will now be guaranteed his full salary at both the NHL and the American Hockey League level should he find himself sent down during the regular season.
The 31 year old defenseman has spent the last 4 seasons of his NHL career with the Washington Capitals, but played just 15 games at the NHL level last season recording 1 goal and adding a single assist for a total of 2 points in the regular season. Kempny played an additional 24 games in the AHL, scoring no goals but picking up 7 assists for a total of 7 points over that stretch of play.
In spite of adding Kempny the Kraken are still look at just over $2.2 million in projected cap space as per Cap Friendly, an important luxury given that restricted free agent defenseman Cale Fleury still remains unsigned and will be in need of a new contract. A contract that will eat up even more of that remaining cap space.
