Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang barely missed a beat after suffering the second stroke of his career in December. Prior to facing the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night, Letang was asked about his health and revealed to Jean-François Chaumont of Journal de Montreal that he cannot guarantee he won’t suffer another stroke in the future. This is what he shared, translated from French:

“It’s never truly behind me,” Letang said. “It has happened several more times, it seems. But we have a plan right now that we will execute it when/if needed. With this plan, I feel less stressed and less anxious thoughts in mind. But everything is stable and perfect. There is no problem with my health.”

Letang missed more than two months back in 2014 after his first stroke, which was caused by a small hole in the wall of his heart. The condition reportedly led to the second stroke as well, which Letang suffered after dealing with a series of debilitating headaches.

The blue liner has got the support of his teammates, especially from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who have helped him shine on the ice, especially in recent overtimes. The Penguins beat the New York Rangers 3-2 in the extra frame on Sunday thanks to Tanger’s third overtime goal this season.

“There are several reasons to explain it. I play with Sid and Malkin, it helps me a lot. But when I jump on the ice in overtime, I also want to make a difference. I want to be the guy who will get the win for my team. There is nothing more enjoyable than scoring in overtime.”

In last night’s night 6-4 loss at the hands of the Canadiens, Letang recorded a goal and two assists. The Penguins have taken sole possession of the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race, moving two points ahead of the New York Islanders.

Letang is focused on playing healthy and pushing his team deep into the postseason.
