Mike Smith will want to forget about Game 1 of the second round series against the Calgary Flames, but legend Lanny McDonald is making sure he won’t!
Acquired by the Flames in 1981, McDonald played 492 games with the Flames over eight seasons racking up 215 goals and 191 assists over that time, and was at the Saddledome on Wednesday night to see the first contest in the Battle of Alberta.
He witnessed how the Flames struck on their very first shot of the game as Elias Lindholm beat Smith just 26 seconds in. Just 25 seconds later Andrew Mangiapane put another past Smith, forcing the Oilers to use their only timeout before the one-minute mark.
However, Smith was kept in, only to get beaten by Brett Ritchie five minutes later. He was then replaced by Mikko Koskinen.
McDonald couldn’t help but taking a shot at Smith himself when he was interviewed by Scott Oake.
