Larkin to get a contract similar to Eichel's or Draisaitl's?

How much do you think he's worth?

Detroit Red Wings young forward Dylan Larkin has 20 points in 21 games, a total that leads the team so far this season. It is also a great argument for a significant pay raise this summer.

With several young players getting huge deals this summer, most importantly Buffalo Sabres' Jack Eichel and Edmonton Oilers' Leon Draisaitl, the Athletic's Craig Custance wonders how much Larkin will get to remain with the Wings?

He however notes that Larkin is not the only young forward looking for an extension in Detroit as the Wings have three prominent young forwards on expiring contracts after this season in Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou. And they are all looking for a big raise.

Larkin's agent, Kurt Overhardt, has revealed that they are in no hurry to get this done.

To find a term and number that’s fair to both sides. You’d like to gather as much information as you can. I don’t want to do some kind of long-term deal and the guy is massively underpaid and I don’t want to do a deal that three years from now he’s massively overpaid.”

I like to do deals that are good for the player and good for the team,” GM Ken Holland added.

Personally, I like to see it where it works out good for everybody.”

Furthermore, Larkin is not quite there yet in comparison to Eichel and Draisaitl with his numbers. The Wings forward is below both players in both goals per game and points per game over the course of his career. So it might be best for him to listen to his agent and wait this season to put up more goals and points in the remaining games.

It’s something you can’t think about much,” Larkin said of his next deal. “It’s like being in your draft year. If you’re sitting there paying attention to the draft rankings, you’re going to watch yourself creep down. There’s such a bigger picture.”
