The Washington Capitals have reportedly traded forward Lars Eller to the Colorado Avalanche.

The trade was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

According to insider Pierre LeBrun, the Capitals receive a 2025 second round pick from Colorado in return for Eller. The Caps also retain 31 percent of Eller's cap hit in the transaction.

The trade was later confirmed by Washington.

Eller is a pending unrestricted free agent that had drawn the interest of several teams, including the New Jersey Devils, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Ottawa Senators.

The 33-year-old forward is in the final year of a five-year deal that earns him $3.5 million against the salary cap. He has seven goals and nine assists in 40 games this season. His average ice time has however dropped by about a minute from previous years.

Eller was a key member of the Capitals in their 2018 Stanley Cup run to the championship, scoring the overtime winner to begin comeback against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Stanley Cup winner against the Vegas Golden Knights.
