There was a feeling that the Colorado Avalanche were going be priced out of the Nazem Kadri sweepstakes, however, insider Darren Dreger reports, a few hours ahead of the opening of free agency, that the Avs are attempting one more time to retain the top forward.
“Joe Sakic and Nazem Kadri’s agent, Darren Ferris continue to talk. Feels like a long-shot with mere hours before the flood gates open, but Colorado wants Naz back. Definitely something to watch. “
There have been speculations that Kadri could land a minimum of $8 million per season on his next deal, but that number could go as high as $10 million. Last week on the “Real Kyper and Bourne” podcast, Nick Kypreos mentioned the Boston Bruins being one of his suitors, along with the Arizona Coyotes and Seattle Kraken.
It’s easy to understand why Kadri could get that massive contract. He registered a career-high 87 points last season, and put up 15 points in 16 games in the playoffs en route to a Stanley Cup victory.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has also wondered if the Washington Capitals could be an option as well, considering veteran center Nicklas Backstrom is likely out for the entirety of the 2022-23 campaign after undergoing hip surgery in June.
This is going to get interesting ahead of the opening of free agency at noon today.
