Moments before the NHL Trade freeze came in action, the Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired Mason Marchment in return for a 2027 second-rounder and 2026 fourth-rounder going back to the Seattle Kraken.

There was no salary retained on Marchment in the deal to Columbus.

The Kraken has been struggling lately, and it felt like Seattle could choose to sell, and it has started with Marchment.

With the NHL Roster Freeze set to begin at midnight EST tonight, which will run until December 28, the deal has just made the deadline.

There have been wo trades in the 11th hour prior to the Trade Freeze. Earlier tonight, the Montreal Canadiens acquired Phillip Danault from the Los Angeles Kings.

Marchment has struggled this season with only 13 points in 29 games, however is coming off back-to-back 20-goal seasons, so a change of scenery might be the perfect outcome here for the veteran forward.

This was a short stint in Seattle for Marchment, who was acquired by the club from the Dallas Stars on June 19 in exchange for two draft picks.

On top of the Blue Jackets, other suitors were reportedly in the mix, including the Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Marchment is in the final year of his contract he signed in July of 2022 with the Stars, which pays him $4.5 million.

The NHL’s holiday trade freeze begins at midnight, meaning all action is paused until Sunday, December 28th. The Blue Jackets made the acquisition of Marchment right before the start of the freeze.

I have to say I don't remember the last time seeing this many trades before the Christmas freeze before...
