The Montreal Canadiens made it official on Wednesday: general manager Kent Hughes announced that star goalie Carey Price will be placed on the off-season long-term injured reserve list.
The press conference was supposed to focus on Kirby Dach’s new contract: the forward agreed to a four-year, $13.5 million contract on Wednesday. However, many questions came about Price, especially with the confirmation that he will land on LTIR.
We all knew it was coming. It had reported that Price suffered a training setback and may miss the entire 2022-23 season, if he isn’t forced to retire and end a 15-season NHL career. Last season, Price did return to action in April, after missing the entire 2021-22 season up until that point upon checking himself into the NHL’s Player Assistance Program, as well as rehabilitating from offseason surgery. For his combined efforts, Price was awarded the Bill Masteron Trophy for his perseverance and dedication to hockey. But unfortunately, it’s been looking like Price’s career could be over: the veteran goalie was scheduled to meet with a doctor in July, but the appointment was cancelled. Habs GM Kent Hughes then announced that Price would be unlikely to play in the upcoming 2022-23 season, casting a shadow of doubt over his future hockey career.
On Wednesday, Hughes offered the latest update on his goalie, and it was just heartbreaking to hear that nothing was getting better. This is from Kevin Vallee of BPM Sports Radio, translated from French:
“Carey’s knee has not responded positively to any treatment since his surgery. We are not very optimistic. […]»
This is just tough to hear, though somewhat expected. It doesn’t mean it is easy for fans to come to grips with the reality of their beloved goalie.
Speaking of goalies, Hughes was also asked to address Cayden Primeau’s contract situation as he remains the last unsigned player in Montreal. Per Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, Hughes did say the Habs are getting closer to a contract with Primeau.
At least that’s better new for the fanbase than what’s been offered on Price.
