On Tuesday, it was confirmed that a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut by a skate during a game.

The tragic story of Johnsson has been a hot topic ever since the 29-year-old of the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers was struck by an opponent’s skate blade in the Elite Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield’s home arena in central England on Oct, 28.

Johnsson unfortunately died as a result of a fatal neck injury.

When the arrest was made, South Yorkshire Police did not the name or age of the suspect, but it is a large assumption that Matt Petgrave, who plays for Sheffield was the one arrested. He was the other player involved in the terrible incident.

On Wednesday morning, it was revealed that the suspect has been released on bail.

“Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive inquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances,” Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said.

Fans have unfortunately seen footage of the tragic scene in which Johnson can be seen skating with the puck toward the Steelers’ net. Petgrave skates toward Johnson and collides with one of his teammates. Then upon the collision, Petgrave’s left skate kicks up as he falls and the blade hits Johnson in the neck. Johnsson got up on his own and was helped off the ice, his jersey is covered in blood. He later died at the hospital.

The Panthers said in a statement on social media that Johnson died tragically following a “freak accident.” As many fans and reporters believe it is also the case.

Johnson’s family, who is still grieving, has chosen to step back to allow the legal process to play out. They originally supported Petgrave in the immediate aftermath of what they described as a terrible accident.

What a sad story and how it is unfolding. I am no expert, but I can only hope that Petgrave’s name is cleared fully because to me this is a shameful injustice being perpetrated by an ignorant police force. If you think that what Petgrave did was intentional then it’s clear to me that you’ve never laced up a pair of skates in your life…

This is already ugly, and it just feels to me like there is more than one victim in this awful situation…
