We all knew when the Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off the 2022-23 campaign that it felt like a do or die season. And right now, the Leafs don’t have much life into them with a 4-4-2 record, placing them seventh in the Atlantic division and 23rd in the entire league.

While fans are calling for management to do something and trade rumours are swirling around Toronto, there is also the question on whether head coach Sheldon Keefe is on the hot seat.

Chatter got much louder on that when former NHL head coach Barry Trotz hinted at the possibility of returning to coach in the league, but behind the bench of an original six team. With the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings all with new coaches and good records, it leaves Toronto as the only plausible destination for Trotz…

Fans are therefore talking about Keefe getting the boot, though Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman pointed out on Wednesday’s 32 Thoughts abridged version the latest update on the coaching situation in Toronto:

“I don’t believe Toronto’s braintrust is in any rush to make a coaching change, and the preference is not to. Sheldon Keefe and Mike Babcock are making around $7 million this season, but it goes beyond the finances. There is recognition, however, that if things don’t get back on track, decisions could get made for them.”

You have to admit that’s a lot of money wrapped up in coaches… It does not feel - yet - like the Maple Leafs are about to push the panic button.

However, it does feel like something has to be done and it may start with a trade to bolster the blue line and get back on track…

Until it gets too late - maybe for Keefe.
