Terrible details emerge surrounding the young NHL prospect currently fighting for his life.
The hockey world has been closely following the story of young Matthew Mayich, a 21 year old defenseman who was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 2023 National Hockey League entry draft... one who is currently fighting for his life.
Late last month reports emerged of a young student athlete who had collapsed during an intense outdoor workout, with that student later revealed to be Mayich. Since that time Mayich has been in a coma at a local hospital in Arizona but Robert Carey, the lawyer currently representing the Mayich family, has stated that Mayich has "zero chance of recovery."
Carey has been publicly outspoken about how this matter has been handled by Arizona State University(ASU), criticizing their investigation into the incident on multiple occasions, but most disturbing of all is what Carey has uncovered through his own investigation.
According to Carey, Mayich was left on the ground for several minutes following his collapse which runs contrary to ASU policy. Mayich should have been rushed immediately to a cooling station or dunked in an ice bath but according to Carey there were no cooling plans in place.
"You have an elite NHL-drafted athlete showing up on the first coach-led workout, the very first day the team could organize formally, and he left the field with no chance of recovery," said Carey as per the CBC. "Obviously there's something wrong."
Carey has revealed that he spoke to a number of players regarding the incident and according to the attorney it sounds like Mayich was showing signs of visible distress prior to collapsing. Mayich was reportedly unable to complete tasks as the workout progressed, a workout that has been describe by Carey with terms like "military-style, grueling, and brutal."
According to Carey, Mayich now "needs a miracle" with the Mayich family and hundreds of others praying for just that in the nightly prayer vigils currently being held for Matthew.
