Leafs acquire defenseman in bizarre transaction on Tuesday.

We have a bit of a strange one to announce.

A report on social media from an official account belonging to the Toronto Marlies has just announced that the Leafs organization has acquired defenseman Alex Gudbranson from the Minnesota Wild on a loan. 

While loans at the American Hockey League level are not unheard of, Gudbranson is a player on an NHL contract and loans of this kind are far more rare. Making this even more bizarre is the fact that both the Wild's AHL affiliate Iowa Wild and the Wild's ECHL affiliate the Quad City Mallards are both in playoff positions at the moment.

Gudbranson has spent this entire season in the ECHL but he may get a shot at the Marlies roster following this loan.
