We all knew it was coming, but now it feels real: the Toronto Maple Leafs are getting ready for life and competition without Mitch Marner. General manager Brad Treliving is tasked with filling one of the biggest holes in the lineup, and the pressure is mounting in Toronto to bring in an impact forward.

Rumors have already linked the Leafs to just about every second-line option on the market. And while the team still has plenty of talent, Marner’s departure leaves a creative spark and a scoring touch that won’t be easy to replace. Head coach Craig Berube and Treliving will need to figure out where all the new pieces fit, and how quickly the group can gel.

Speaking at the NHL’s preseason GM and coaches meeting on Tuesday, Treliving struck a cautious tone, hinting at possible moves for fans to anticipate in Toronto:

“We’re always looking. I don’t think you ever stop. Whether it happens or not, we’ll see. We’ve got a lot of bodies right now, so we’ll see. More than likely, unless something changes, we’ll go with what we’ve got and see where it all sorts itself out… We’re excited about the group we’ve got, but we’ll see what it looks like once we get going and get everybody up to speed and get the new players acclimated to the team, the market, their teammates, and really where they fit.”

It’s not exactly the blockbuster quote Leafs fans might be hoping for, but it does underline the balancing act the front office faces: patience versus urgency. Toronto has to give its new additions time to find their roles, but at the same time, the expectations in this market don’t leave much room for error.

Whether Treliving sticks with his current group or pulls the trigger on another move, one thing is certain: all eyes are out on the Maple Leafs in Toronto, and the post-Marner era is about to begin.
