The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to plenty of surprising names over the years, but the latest player connected to the organization may be one of the most polarizing yet.

According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, veteran Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas could emerge as a potential fit for Toronto if he and the Ducks are unable to work out a new contract.

The report immediately caught the attention of Leafs fans, many of whom remember Gudas for his physical style of play and, perhaps most notably, his controversial knee-on-knee collision with Auston Matthews during the 2024-25 season.

Gudas, 36, is coming off a challenging year in Anaheim. After serving as captain for the past two seasons, the rugged defenseman admitted during his exit interview that he had been dealing with a lingering ankle issue that worsened following a sprain late in the 2025-26 campaign.

The veteran blue liner’s performance dipped as a result, with age and injuries appearing to take a toll on a player whose game has always relied heavily on physicality. However, Gudas still brings qualities that remain highly valued around the league.

Despite his declining mobility, he continues to be one of hockey’s most intimidating net-front defenders and a player capable of making life miserable for opposing forwards. That kind of edge is something many observers have argued Toronto has lacked during recent playoff runs.

His leadership has also been praised throughout Anaheim’s rebuilding process. Younger Ducks players frequently pointed to Gudas as an important mentor, and the organization viewed him as a stabilizing presence during difficult seasons. This could be a very useful asset in Toronto’s dressing room.

However, on Friday early morning, Toronto kicked off its overhaul with a different move on the blue line, acquiring Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade with the Lightning. It remains to be seen if adding Gudas to the mix remains an option.

Whether Leafs fans would embrace the idea is another story entirely.

For some, Gudas represents exactly the type of battle-tested veteran Toronto needs. For others, the thought of seeing a longtime villain wearing blue and white is difficult to imagine.

Either way, the reaction has already begun. And if Weekes’ report proves accurate, this could become one of the more fascinating storylines of Toronto’s offseason.
