Even the No. 1 pick won’t matter if Matthews isn’t convinced the Leafs can follow through.
The Toronto Maple Leafs may have landed a franchise-altering opportunity by winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery, but it might not carry as much weight as fans expect… at least when it comes to Auston Matthews.
According to insider Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, the lottery win alone won’t be enough to influence Matthews’ outlook on the team’s future. Instead, the star forward is expected to take a much deeper approach when evaluating what comes next.
Friedman explained that Matthews plans to sit down with the organization and look beyond just the vision being presented. The key question won’t simply be what the Leafs want to do: it will be how they plan to execute it.
And that’s where things could get complicated.
Even if Matthews agrees with the direction of the team, doubts about the ability to follow through could become a major sticking point. As Friedman pointed out, one player — even a top prospect — isn’t enough to completely change the fortunes of a franchise overnight.
“This player alone is not going to completely change the fortunes of the franchise, although it will help,” Friedman noted.
The comments highlight the pressure now facing Toronto’s front office. With a new general manager in place and the No. 1 overall pick secured, expectations are sky-high. But for Matthews, it’s not about hype: it’s about results.
As the offseason approaches, the Leafs aren’t just building toward the draft. They’re also working to convince their biggest star that they can deliver on what they promise.
