In case you missed it in all the pomp and circumstance of transactions on July 1st, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a shrewd trade this offseason in picking up 24 year old forward Mattias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth.

The Finnish winger had a rough season with Utah last season, putting up just eight goals and 18 points in 55 games, after putting up a career high 57 points in 2023-24. Maccelli is entering the final year of a three year deal deal that pays him $3.425 million annually and according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman the Leafs had to beat out offers from the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers to land him via trade.

"I heard there were three or four in on Mattias Macelli, I think Boston was one, Edmonton was one also," said Friedman on the most recent 32 Thoughts Podcast from Sportsnet today.

Ironically enough, the Bruins tabbed to Oilers to solve their problem after missing out on Maccelli, by picking up Viktor Arvidsson in a deal with the Oilers. The Oilers, in turn, signed forward Andrew Mangiapane to fill their needs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Utah Mammoth have made a trade.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger, the Maple Leafs have acquired forward Matias Maccelli from the Mammoth and in exchange are giving up a third round pick.

According to Dreger there are some conditions attached to this pick, but no additional details at this time.

Maccelli is a 24 year old winger who can play on either side of the wing. He was originally drafted in the 4th round (98th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes and has played his entire career with the Coyotes and subsequently the Mammoth after they were moved last season.

The Finnish forward isn't particularly big, a departure from the type of player Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving seems to covet, coming it at 5 foot 11 inches and 185 lbs.

Maccelli is entering the final year of a 3 year deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $3.425 million per season. Although Maccelli is on an expiring contract, the Maple Leafs will retain a great deal of control here with Maccelli set to be a restricted free agent at the end of his current deal.
