It is no secret: the Toronto Maple Leafs will have to move pieces around to make room on the cap space for forward Zach Hyman who is set to return from injury.

It is strongly believed around the National Hockey League that Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is getting ready to make a move and Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran believes Nic Petan was recalled into the lineup against the Los Angeles Kings to be showcased for a trade.

Last week, Petan was loaned to the club’s AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies in an attempt to get him more consistent playing time. On Tuesday, he recorded two shots on goal in 12 minutes and 57 seconds of playing time. He however failed to record a point.

McGran also wonders if Dubas “can package two or three of his spare parts and get something more meaningful than cap space back.”

The Leafs have reportedly been shopping for better help in between the pipes, however Dubas remains reluctant to trade any more draft picks after giving up his 2020 first-rounder to the Carolina Hurricanes in June’s Patrick Marleau deal.

Let’s keep an eye on this.
