A minor transaction that could have major consequences on the Leafs' season.
This just in, the Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Matt Murray on the injured reserve due to a chronic ankle injury.
As a result, the Leafs have called up goaltender Joseph Woll as well as forwards Pontus Holmberg and Alex Steeves from the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
The 28 year old Murray has played just 19 games this season going 11-5-2 with a 2.73 goals against average and .911 save percentage. While he has been in and out of the lineup, he's actually been pretty consistent at least when you look at the numbers. Backup Ilya Samsonov has played the lion's share of games this season, but he has experienced some injury issues as well.
As for Woll, he's been stellar for the Marlies this season. He's fresh off an AHL All-Star Game appearance and has put up a remarkable .930 save percentage in 14 games. He'll likely ride the pine for the Leafs, but don't be surprised if the 24 year old manages to earn some playing time with Murray out of the lineup. While Woll's recall from the Marlies might appear to be a minor transaction, it could turn out to be a major one if he manages to make an impact with the Leafs. Stay tuned.
