After a flurry of trades across the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be ready to make another big move, and could start off with their blue line. Defenseman Rasmus Andersson of the Calgary Flames is reportedly on Toronto’s radar, according to insiders Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger.

LeBrun noted that Toronto previously tried to acquire Andersson at last year’s deadline and that the team remains interested. Andersson could be a player the Leafs might consider extending if a trade comes together.

“My understanding is that the Leafs would be one of those teams that perhaps Andersson would consider extending with, if in fact a trade would work out between those two teams,” said LeBrun.

Dreger added context to Toronto’s current predicament: the Leafs need a top-four defenseman or possibly a top-line winger to jump-start captain Auston Matthews’ production.

“They need the prices to come down, they need more sellers in the market,” Dreger said, highlighting the challenge GM Brad Treliving faces in navigating limited assets and high demand for elite players.

Andersson, a steady presence on Calgary’s back end, could fill a significant void for the Leafs’ defense, but as Dreger emphasized, acquiring him will not be cheap. Toronto must balance roster needs with the realities of a competitive trade market.

For Leafs fans, it’s a waiting game. With the trade deadline still months away and teams still jockeying for top talent, every day could bring fresh speculation and potentially, a blockbuster that reshapes the Maple Leafs’ lineup.

If you’re a Toronto fan, would you want Andersson on the roster?
