The finalists come from two from rival teams, with one wild card still in the mix
According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Toronto Maple Leafs have whittled their list of potential GM candidates down to two names... or three... or maybe more.
Seravalli confirmed today that the Leafs have at least two "finalists" in Boston Bruins assistant GM Evan Gold and New York Rangers assistant GM Ryan Martin. Seravalli also reports that there may be a third candidate in the mix, potentially more.
From Seravalli today:
That's a long way for Seravalli to report that Gold and Martin are coming in for second interviews amongst other candidates.
Gold, a Toronto native, was hired by the Bruins back in 2015 to work in their legal department and has worked his way up to the assistant GM position with the team while simultaneously holding down the GM position for the team's AHL affiliate in Providence.
Martin, meanwhile, has a lengthy resume as an NHL assistant GM and an AHL GM. Most notably he spent a dozen year's as the Detroit Red Wings' AHL GM in Grand Rapids and helped turn that franchise into a perennial feeder of talent for the NHL club.
Both Gold and Martin as seen as top candidates for any of the vacant GM positions across the league and are expected to receive plenty of interest as the offseason wears on. Stay tuned.
