Can Brad Treliving get a deal (or two) done before the season?
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made some significant moves this offseason, yet they still have less than $2 million in salary cap space heading into the 2025-26 NHL season.
Very quickly, let's look at GM Brad Treliving's offseason so far:
IN:
Nicolas Roy
Matias Maccelli
Dakota Joshua
Henry Thrun
Michael Pezzetta
Travis Boyd
Vinni Lettieri
Benoit-Olivier Groulx
OUT:
Mitch Marner
Pontus Holmberg
Ryan Reaves
Alex Steeves
Matt Murray
Nick Abruzzese
RE-SIGNED:
John Tavares
Matthew Knies
Steven Lorentz
Nick Robertson
Dakota Mermis
To me, what I see is a Mitch Marner out and then a whole lotta tinkering around the edges. And that tinkering hasn't really provided the team with any additional cap space to make a big move, either this offseason or during the upcoming campaign. So... what next?
Leafs insider Anthony Di Marco suggests that the team has added forwards David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok to their trade block and are hoping to move their combined $4.5 million annual salary via trade.
"Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf are top candidates to be cleared out," Di Marco reported on Daily Faceoff earlier this week.
Certainly Treliving would like to move those contracts, both negotiated by former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, but it won't be easy. Neither player is worth the value of their contract and the Leafs may have to add a sweetener in order to get out from under their contractual obligations.
