Leafs reportedly scouting former 7th overall pick for blockbuster trade

Toronto scouts were spotted at a Blackhawks game, and a former top-10 pick barely touched the ice.

It's no secret that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the market for defensive help, and GM John Chayka has had his scouts working overtime. On Tuesday night, Toronto's scouting staff was dispatched to multiple games across the league as trade discussions continue to heat up. One particular matchup, though, caught the attention of some very observant hockey fans.

A Former Top Pick Gathering Dust in Chicago

The Blackhawks hosted the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, walking away with a tight 2-1 victory. But the real story wasn't the final score. It was what happened, or rather didn't happen, on Chicago's bench. Kevin Korchinski, the seventh overall selection in the 2022 NHL Draft, was barely given any ice time during the contest. Reporters and fans alike picked up on it almost immediately, and the fact that Leafs scouts were in the building only added fuel to the speculation.

Korchinski is a 6-foot-3, 22-year-old left-shot defenseman who, despite his lofty draft pedigree, has only managed to suit up for 108 NHL games so far in his career. Head coach Jeff Blashill hasn't seemed particularly keen on deploying him, and the situation in Chicago doesn't appear to be improving. The Blackhawks are stacked with left-handed blueliners, boasting Alex Vlasic, Wyatt Kaiser, and Bowen Byram all competing for minutes on that same side. That logjam has effectively squeezed Korchinski out of the lineup, and it increasingly feels like Chicago could be open to moving on from the young defender.

Leafs fans on social media wasted no time calling for Chayka to "rescue" Korchinski from his situation, and honestly, you can see why the fit makes sense on paper. Toronto has been looking to get younger on the back end, and a player with Korchinski's size, skating ability, and draft stock doesn't become available every day.

What a Deal Could Look Like for Toronto

The encouraging part for the Leafs is that Korchinski's diminished role in Chicago could actually work in their favor when it comes to the price tag. A former top-10 pick who isn't getting minutes and plays a position of surplus for his current team is unlikely to command a king's ransom. That said, Leafs fans should be asking the right questions about why things haven't clicked for Korchinski so far. His limited usage appears to be more about roster construction in Chicago than any glaring deficiency in his game, but Toronto's scouts will undoubtedly be weighing every pro and con before making a recommendation to Chayka.

If the Leafs can land a young, talented defenseman without giving up significant assets, it could be one of the smarter moves of the trade season. The next few days should tell us a lot about whether Toronto's interest goes beyond just watching from the press box.
