Mitch is gone, so who picks up the slack on the top unit?
The Toronto Maple Leafs took to the ice today with training camp opening this week and head coach Craig Berube unveiled a new look top line for the team.
Replacing former Leafs superstar Mitch Marner on the top unit is newcomer Matias Maccelli, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Utah Mammoth.
Maccelli took rushes alongside Leafs captain Auston Matthews and breakout star Matthew Knies, giving the team a new look up front.
Now, I realize that this is literally Day 1 of training camp and that things can and will change as the season rolls on, but what an opportunity for the 24 year old Maccelli. He struggled last season in Utah scoring just 8 goals and 18 points in 55 games, but previously had two outstanding seasons with the Arizona Coyotes. He managed a career high 17 goals and 57 points in 2023-24 and Leafs fans are hoping he can return to that level of production, if not more, in 2025-26.
