A behind-the-scenes clip revealed a raw, emotional exchange few fans were meant to see.
A lot happened in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night as new Penguins goalie Stuart Skinner faced his former team just a couple days after the Edmonton Oilers traded him out.
Before the game, team reporter Gene Principe was interviewing Oilers captain Connor McDavid and his cameraman caught Skinner passing by his former teammate and friend, and the two embraced.
But then, it was puck drop, and reality quickly hit Skinner that he was no longer a member of the Oilers. His former teammate Leon Draisaitl had four assists in the 6-4 win and became the fourth-fastest active player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points. The entire Oilers’ bench swarmed Draisaitl, right next to Skinner, who, of course, could not congratulate his friend.
Once the game was over, the entire Edmonton dressing room celebrated Draisaitl’s accomplishment with custom t-shirts and cigarettes, and once again, footage caught Skinner and his former teammate.
The leaked video shows Skinner hugging Draisaitl and McDavid, who scored on him twice in the game, in what looked to be an emotional moment between the three players.
For the first time in NHL history, goalies that were involved in the same trade faced one another within seven days of the transaction. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots for his second win with Edmonton, and Skinner made 17 saves in his debut for Pittsburgh.
But this one had to be extra tough on Skinner.
