Lehner shuts down Chicago reporters with interview of the year

In case you missed it this past weekend, Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Robin Lehner reached out to fans on social media after a shootout loss, asking fans how he can improve in the shootout.

Check it out:

Incredible. Who else in the NHL would engage with fans this way? The truth is... Lehner is just a straight up, solid, no-BS kind of guy. His teammates respect him for it and his fans love him for it. But... he doesn't always get along with the media.

Take his comments about Saturday's shootout loss earlier today and how the Chicago media spun the events. Lehner puts the onus on Chicago media members for constantly spinning a negative narrative, despite the fact that his team earned a hard-fought point against the hottest team in the NHL, the Dallas Stars. And what are the headlines the following morning? "Debrincat can't buy a goal" and "Lehner loses another shootout."

Check out Lehner's explanation:

First off, how can you not LOVE Robin Lehner? Again, the guy is a solid, no-BS kind of guy who just tells it like it is. Nerves? You think Robin Lehner is nervous in a shootout? The guy has been through it all over the course of his 10 year pro career. He's been open and honest about his struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction and mental illness. He's not going to be rattled by a shootout.

Secondly, Lehner has struggled in the shootout this season there's no denying it. In five attempts, he has just one save. That's not good enough. But for the media to throw cold water on a Blackhawks team that missed out on a single point in a skills competition against the hottest team in the NHL... it's just silly. Kudos to Lehner for calling out the media and for reaching out to the fans for support. Hopefully he rights the ship this season when it comes to the shootout because if the Blackhawks were to get on a bit of a heater, they could do some damage in the Central Division. The Blackhawks aren't the same team they've been for the past decade, but a healthy and motivated tandem of Lehner and Corey Crawford in goal could help propel them back into the mix.
