It appears as though the National Hockey League career of veteran forward Leo "Uncle Leo" Komarov may have reached it's conclusion.
On Sunday morning it was announced that the 35 year old Estonian winger had agreed to terms on a new 1 year deal, but that deal would not be coming from an NHL franchise. Instead the announcement was made by Lulea Hockey of the Swedish Hockey League, an indication that Komarov will be beginning the next chapter of his career in Europe.
Playing overseas will be very familiar territory for Komarov who began his career as a professional hockey player in the Finnish Elite League all the way back during the 2005 - 2006 season. Komarov spent several years in that league before moving on to the Kontinental Hockey League and it was only after a long stint in the KHL that Komarov would eventually make his NHL debut as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Throughout his NHL career Komarov would split time between the aforementioned Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders, appearing in a total of 491 regular season games and scoring 63 goals while adding 107 assists for a total of 170 career points in the NHL. Komarov also made a number of playoff appearances with 59 playoff games under his belt in which he recorded 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 career playoff points.
The financial terms of his new deal have not been disclosed.
We wish Leo Komarov all the best on this latest chapter in his hockey career.
