Leon Draisaitl doesn't hold back after a tough loss on Sunday.
The Edmonton Oilers are off to a rough start to the 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season, one that included a third consecutive loss on Sunday. The Oilers fought valiantly but in the end it would be the Detroit Red Wings who would triumph by a score of 4-2, a loss that seems to be weighing heavily on some of the players in the Oilers locker room.
Following the conclusion of the game, Oilers star forward Leon Draisaitl was asked about the team's struggles and he didn't mince his words.
"Just not creating enough offense," said Draisaitl. "Certainly not for a lack of effort, everyone is trying really hard. It's tough going right now."
Draisaitl praised the defensive effort from his teammates and focused the blame on the lack of scoring from offensive players like himself.
"We're just not scoring enough," said Draisaitl. "I think we're playing fine defensively but you're not gonna win many games scoring 1 or 2 goals."
It would be easy to point the finger of blame elsewhere in a situation like this but the only man that Draisaitl was looking to blame was himself. Draisaitl was asked if the team's struggles could be related to the large roster turnover the Oilers have had to deal with this season, but he dismissed that as a potential excuse and again suggested the blame was his entirely his own.
"It takes a little bit of time but it's not that you know?" asked Draisaitl. "It's me."
Draisaitl even went so far as to suggest that his underperformance was impacting the rest of the team.
"[I'm] not feeling right now," admitted Draisaitl. "You know the game changes when your top guys are feeling it and they're seeing it and creating offense. It changes the entire dynamic of a group. I just have to take a look in the mirror and figure out something to be better."
