Lian Bichsel unable to leave the ice under his own power after hit from Fabian Zetterlund.
Oh boy this situation looks terrible.
Dallas Stars defenseman Lian Bichsel appears to have been seriously injured on Sunday night during a game against the Ottawa Senators. I really feel for Bichsel here who is just 21 years old and was playing in what was shaping up to be his first ever full season in the National Hockey League.
Bichsel was injured with a little over 4 minutes left in the second period when he was on the receiving end of what was otherwise a very routine hit from Senators forward Fabian Zetterlund. The hit wasn't delivered with much force and clearly was not designed to inflict injury on Bichsel, but unfortunately disaster would strike.
Bichsel appeared to try to maintain his balance after the hit which in turn caused him to go awkwardly into the boards. Although it was hard to tell, it looks as though Bichsel's left leg went into the boards at a terrible angle and was jolted to the side after the weight of his body came crashing down on that leg.
Regardless of what happened it was clear that Bichsel was in a ton of pain and appeared to be clutching at his legs as if to indicate that was the source of his injury. Unfortunately things would only get worse from there with Bichsel unable to leave the ice under his own power, needing the help of several trainers and Stars captain Jamie Benn just to get off the ice.
