The rivalry between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens is still alive. Even in the first game of the 2023-24 season.
In the third period of the contest as the Leafs held the 3-2 led, star forward Auston Matthews attempted to add to it, but was robbed by Canadiens goalie Jake Allen with a terrific safe. Tyler Bertuzzi tried to catch the rebound, but a scrum erupted in front of the net and all players on the ice got involved, with Leafs’ defenseman Mark Giordano flying and tackling his opponents and officials attempting to break everyone apart before assessing penalties.
On the ensuing power-play, Cole Caufield tie the game back for his Canadiens. Just moments later, it was Alex New Newhook, who also scored earlier in the game, who got the lead back for Montreal.
Talk about a momentum shift, holy.
What a game to kick off the season between the rivals.
