On Saturday night the Seattle Kraken unveiled what will be their mascot for the foreseeable future during a preseason game held a Climate Pledge Arena. The Kraken were facing off against their cross border rivals the Vancouver Canucks, a team that will likely grow into quite the rival in the coming years given their relatively close proximity to one another, and it seems that the mascot may have even buoyed their spirits with the Kraken taking a 4 - 0 win over the Canucks.
The introduction of the mascot itself, who has been identified as "Buoy the Troll", was a little less well received than the win itself however with quite a mixed reaction to the announcement on social media. I'll be perfectly honest, I thought the way that Buoy was introduced coming down from the rafters suspended on a rope was a little bizarre for an NHL mascot. Here's a look at how it all went down:
It was something of an awkward introduction but that wasn't the only criticism that the new mascot received, with some simply disliking the way that it looked in general. To be blunt, it doesn't resemble a buoy at all, and instead just looks like a big blue troll doll which some people weren't a big fan of. Perhaps the most comical criticism of the new mascot however came when a young man who was in attendance for the game was asked to share his thoughts on the new mascot on a live mic.
Perhaps they were expecting a different answer or perhaps they simply didn't realize that kids can be brutally honest at times, but that is exactly what they got as a response. The young man made his feelings painfully clear, much to the displeasure of the new mascot who did a great job of taking the criticism and turning it into something amusing. The only thing the mascot could have done better was perhaps shed a mock tear, but that may have been a little difficult given the obvious lack of tear ducts.
Do you agree with the kid? Was this a blunder on the part of the Kraken? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
