Logan Stanley signs just 2 days before the start of the season.

It took a lot longer than he likely expected, but veteran National Hockey League defenseman Logan Stanley has found a new home.

On Sunday morning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that Stanley and the New York Islanders were closing in on a short term contract. Friedman believes that the deal will come in at a cap hit of $1.5 million on a 1 year contract, and the Islanders have since officially confirmed that they have indeed signed Stanley.

Stanley has established himself as a big physical defenseman throughout his NHL career thus far, nearly all of which was spent as a member of the Winnipeg Jets. Stanley's value took a bit of a hit however following a trade to the Buffalo Sabres after the Sabres opted to make Stanley a healthy scratch for their entire second round playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens. Stanley wasn't listed as injured during the series which created the perception that Sabres veteran head coach Lindy Ruff felt he couldn't trust him in the biggest games of the season.

While you could argue that was simply a one-off, the fact that Stanley has had to wait this long to secure a new contract does suggest he struggled to find the right fit as a free agent over the summer.

That being said the Islanders had the cap flexibility to make this move and adding some toughness to the blue line at such a low number, especially given the contracts we've seen flying around over the summer, was a very low-risk move on the part of Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche.
