The Capitals take a chance on the 27 year old lefty goalie.

This just in, the Washington Capitals have reportedly signed 27 year old goaltender and pending unrestricted free agent Logan Thompson to a six year contract worth $5.85 million per season.

ESPN's Greg Wyshynski reports that the deal is done and that the team will make an announcement any moment.

Thompson, who was acquired by the Capitals from the Vegas Golden Knights this past offseason, has been absolutely electric in Washington this season. He has an incredible 22 wins in 27 starts and a 2.09 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. He has split time with fellow goalie Charlie Lindgren to form the strongest goaltending tandem in the entire NHL.

Thompson was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, but is now under contract through 2031 when he'll turn 34 years old. He was previously making just barely above the league's minimum $775,000 salary so this is quite a jump for a guy who has earned every penny. The native of Calgary, Alberta was playing Canadian University hockey and in the low minor leagues (ECHL) just a few short years ago and now he's the starting goalie on the NHL's best team and he's got a $35 million contract in his back pocket. Well done, Logan!
